WHO?
Ata Rangi, meaning ‘new dawn’ in Maori, is owned by Clive Paton, his wife Phyll, and his sister Alison. In 1980, Clive planted their bare, stony home paddock on the outskirts of Martinborough, becoming one of just a handful of people to start growing grapes in the area. Ata Rangi’s first vineyard covered less than five hectares of vines planted in deep, well-draining alluvial gravel soils, marking the original course of the local river flowing down from the hills on the eastern side of the valley.
WHERE?
The creation of this wine was inspired by the deep crimson flowers of the iconic Pohutukawa tree (New Zealand Christmas tree). The Pinot Noir grapes for Crimson are sourced from vines in Martinborough ranging from 5 to 25 years old. The area is deep gravel terraces with an alluvial layer of loess over gravel.
WHY?
The Martinborough harvest of 2020 had favorable weather conditions during the early part of the growing season, which was ideal for producing quality fruit.
