WHO?
Rufina is the smallest of all the Chianti zones but also convincingly one of the most authentic. The cold winds that blow down the Sieve valley ensure finesse and definition in the wines, qualities few producers in Chianti Classico can match. Selvapiana is a classic Tuscan farm in the heart of Chianti Rufina. Its original purpose was a summer residence for Florentine bishops. Since 1957, it has been owned by Mr. Giuntini Massetia, who tirelessly works on restoring the reputation of Chianti Rufina.
WHERE?
An excellent symbiosis thanks to the friendship between the owners of Ville di Petrognano, Cecilia Galeotti Ottieri, and Francesca Giuntini. Selvapiana leases this estate of 6 hectares. This unique and stunning area is located at the foot of the Apennines on the border between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. Pomino is one of the historically significant production zones in Tuscany. In 1716, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III de’Medici, created the first wine code to protect and delimit the most important viticultural areas. Alongside Pomino were Chianti Classico, Carmignano, and Valdarno Superiore.
WHY?
In the hills above the Sieve River valley, where Selvapiana’s estate is located, nestled in the serene pine forest that guards the secret of the Pomino DOC wine-growing area, only two estates have settled (Selvapiana and Frescobaldi). The cold, higher altitude area on the border between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna yields fresh, acid-concentrated grapes enriched with fresh red berries. It’s a blend of 60% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Merlot. Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks; Sangiovese is aged in large French oak barrels while Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are matured in French barriques. Earthy dark forest berries alternate with an elusive amalgam of leather, tobacco, sun-dried tomatoes, and red oranges. Silky mineral and irresistibly drinkable.
