The Massolino family has owned their 23 hectares of vineyards since 1896. Winemaker Franco Massolino has done a marvelous job, blending change that respects tradition in every aspect while allowing the character of the vineyards located in Serralunga d’Alba to speak for itself – the starting point for some of the most magnificent, structured, and long-lived Barolos in existence.
WHERE?
Vigna Rionda, undeniably one of the most iconic cru vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba and perhaps even in the entire Barolo zone. In the early 1960s, the Massolino family was so impressed by the position of Vigna Rionda that they exchanged a much larger vineyard for a tiny plot within this famous cru vineyard.
WHY?
Undoubtedly, the most corpulent and expressive Barolo and the pinnacle of artistry and virtuosity by the Massolino family. The monolithic structure built from fruit and firm tannins is tamed by freshness and unparalleled balance. The finish is remarkably long. An outstanding wine of collector’s value that will effortlessly sail through the next 30 or so years with exceptional grace.
