WHO?
In 1931, the Moueix family purchased Chateau Fonroque. In 1979, the estate joined other Right Bank wineries and came under the management of Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix. In 2005, Alain Moueix and Chateau Fonroque became members of the Syndicat de Vignerons en Biodynamie, and the estate became one of the first vineyards in Bordeaux to adopt biodynamic farming techniques. This led Fonroque to obtain the Biodyvin and Ecocert certifications, and from the 2008 vintage onwards, they transitioned to 100% biodynamic practices for vineyard management.
WHERE?
The Fonroque vineyard spans 20 hectares and is planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard is in one large block, which is uncommon for a vineyard of its size on the Right Bank. It is divided into 30 separate parcels, with most vines planted near the Chateau. The terroir consists of clay, limestone, and sandy soils.
WHY?
This red wine focuses clearly on one grape variety, which is Merlot. Only the finest grape material is used for this exceptionally powerful varietal Château Fonroque Merlot. After harvest, the grapes are immediately transferred to the press. There, they are sorted and carefully crushed. Fermentation then begins in small wooden vats at controlled temperatures. After fermentation, the wine ages for several months in oak barrels.
