WHO?
Ivan took on the task of clearing 3 hectares of virgin forest to secure space for organic vineyard cultivation. The cellar itself, in the form of an upgraded wooden traditional homestead, dates back to 1835, which Ivan restored with the aim of preserving cultural heritage. Wine production is based on the natural quality of the grapes, without any corrections or interventions in the must or wine, while fermentations are carried out spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. This approach aims to faithfully convey the specific characteristics of the soil or vineyard position, as well as the characteristics of each vintage and grape variety, resulting in original, sincere, and natural wines.
WHERE?
Located on the slopes of Moslavačka gora, in Popovača, the Ivan Kosovec family farm owns 3 hectares of vineyards with around 19,000 vines on one of the most beautiful vineyard sites in Moslavina. The grape varieties include Škrlet, Chardonnay, Frankovka, Zweigelt, and Crni Pinot. The philosophy of vineyard cultivation and processing is based on ecological principles and techniques, with minimal vineyard protection relying on dedicated manual work and reduced mechanization, without the use of artificial fertilizers, insecticides, or herbicides.
WHY?
The Blaufränkisch, also known as Frankovka, is an Austrian cultivar widespread in Germany (Lemberger), Hungary (Kékfrankos), and Croatia (Frankovka). With a body at 12.5% alcohol content, it achieves admirable harmony in the vineyard. Freshness and tannins are balanced, and the aging process in the cellar aligns with the minimal interventionist approach of the winemaker. Therefore, this Frankovka is still young enough to exhibit the grapes from which it originated. The fruitiness carries an earthy note typical of the variety, with aromas in the dark fruit spectrum. On the palate, it’s dynamic, lively, and versatile, complementing various dishes.
