WHO?
Winemaker and owner Franco Massolino has done a remarkable job, something that sets him apart from the crowd of today’s winemakers in Barolo. By combining a change that respects tradition in every aspect and letting the character of the vineyards themselves, located in Serralunga d’Alba, speak for itself, he has reached the starting point of some of the most magnificent, structured, and long-lasting wines based on Nebbiolo.
WHERE?
Massolino currently owns 23 hectares, and the grapes for this wine come from several vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba, located at 340 meters above sea level, covering 2.1 hectares. The Guyot training system is practiced, with vines, on average, 10-12 years old, planted in rows of 5,500 plants per hectare. The predominant soil composition is limestone.
WHY?
Declassified Barolo, Barolino, or if you wanted to compare it to the younger brother of Brunello (Rosso di Montalcino), you could call it Rosso di Barolo. In typical style, with much more immediate aromatics, finesse, and a gentler tannic structure, this baby Barolo is designed for immediate enjoyment. Smooth, delicate, with dominant aromas of cherries and wild strawberries framed by a balsamic ethereal cloak underlined by the chalky mineral character typical of Serralunga.
