WHO?
Quinta do Infantado has been owned by the Roseira family for over a century, and they have long been known for bottling their products on the estate itself, rather than shipping the wine in bulk down the Douro River for bottling elsewhere. The name ‘Infantado’ derives from the term ‘Infante’ (Prince in Portuguese), and it was the Portuguese royal family that first built the winery in 1816.
WHERE?
All of Infantado’s vineyards have achieved the highest ‘A’ status (equivalent to Grand Cru status under DOC regulations), and the poor, schist-rich soil gives the wines excellent concentration and aromatic complexity. The grapes for this elegant red wine grew in the Cima Corgo subregion, particularly in the Vale de Moinhos, Serra Douro, and Serra de Cotas locations, which are situated at 280-300 meters above sea level, with a total area of 10 hectares.
WHY?
Tinto is always a blend of localities because the different varieties are planted and mixed together in the vineyard itself. Finesse, concentration, and a traditional approach are the most important characteristics of the Quinta do Infantado style. Hints of clove on the nose are soon replaced by notes of dark berries, ripe cherries, and freshly cut tobacco, wrapped in a cloak of dried tea leaves and wild strawberries. It is a terroir-driven wine with a sense of the region it comes from and an evident mineral stamp.
