WHO?
A combination of world-renowned vineyards and a top-notch winery makes Racines one of the most exciting modern viticultural projects in California. It is a collaboration between Etienne de Montille from Domaine de Montille in Volnay and his Californian winemaker Brian Sieve. In 2016, Etienne and Brian spent months traveling through the Golden State in search of its best vineyard locations. Their goal was to discover great producers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and to get to know the various appellations of the state. After hundreds of tastings and meetings, they ultimately fell in love with Santa Barbara County and its mix of ambitious young winemakers and historic vineyards such as ‘Bien Nacido’ and ‘Sanford & Benedict’.
WHERE?
The grapes are grown at various locations along the Santa Rosa Road corridor in the Santa Rita Hills area. The vineyards include La Mesa, La Encantada, La Rinconada, and the Sanford & Benedict vineyard, featuring diverse soil types ranging from sandy loam, loam, and clay loam to shale.
WHY?
An average of 50% whole clusters were retained during fermentation using native yeasts. The fermentation was managed with the use of foulage and pigeage for about three weeks before the wine was transferred to 228-liter barrels.
