WHO?
Altos Las Hormigas has become globally known as specialists in Malbec, with a reputation as one of the top 5 producers of this distinctive variety. One of the co-owners of this winery, Pedro Parra, is the world’s leading expert in soil. Winemakers Alberto Antonini and his Tuscan colleague, Antonio Morescalchi, were so impressed by the vineyards surrounding Mendoza that after their first trip to Argentina in 1995, they managed to convince several of their friends to join them in this joint venture.
WHERE?
Altos Las Hormigas is located in Luján de Cuyo, the only officially recognized appellation in Mendoza and one of the best wine-producing areas in the region. The grapes come from vineyards in Medrano, Barrancas, and Lulunta in the Mendoza region, situated between 900 -1,000 meters above sea level. The climate here is semi-desert with hot days and cold nights, ultimately allowing for the development of complex aromatic components in the grapes.
WHY?
It is deep ruby in color with a hint of blue towards the edge. The nose reveals traditional notes of red fruit, cherries, and freshly picked plums. Everything here revolves around freshness and elegance – on the palate, it is juicy and soft with ripe but structured tannins. An excellent introduction to all the charms of Argentine terroir.
