WHO?
Located in the Coal River Valley, the Tolpuddle Vineyard was planted in 1988 by industry legends Tony Jordan and Garry Crittenden. The vineyard is named after the Tolpuddle Martyrs, who were exiled to Australia in 1834 for forming an agricultural union in Tolpuddle, Dorset.
WHERE?
The 20-hectare vineyard, facing northeast, is situated in the Coal River Valley, isolated from rainy periods, making it dry but cool. The dry climate ensures very low risk of vine disease, allowing the grapes to hang longer on the vines to achieve full ripeness. The vineyard is located on a gentle slope, with soil composed of silica over sandstone and moderate fertility, ensuring balanced vines. In 2006, the vineyard won the inaugural Tasmanian Vineyard of the Year award, reflecting the performance of this unique and prominent site.
WHY?
After a rainy winter, the 2021 season opened with a wetter spring than average, providing good soil moisture. The region experienced one of the coldest seasons on record, resulting in a high percentage of smaller berries, lower yields, and excellent flavor concentration.
